Misconceptions about Coil Coating: Its Better than You Think

Although the pre-painted metal process has been around for years, some misconceptions about the process still exist. LITONG, a manufacturer of aluminum coating lines, explains the benefits of coating and the misconceptions people have about it.

Misconception 1:Outsourcing increases costs

Like most manufacturers, companies often have to adapt their paint shops to changing environmental standards, strict health regulations and increasing overhead. Companies are struggling to reduce costs and remain competitive. Outsourcing metal handling and coating operations can mitigate or even eliminate these costs.
One suggestion is to create a pre-paint conversion team of internal and external managers and suppliers to analyze the product and process to determine if pre-paint conversion is feasible.
Once the conversion process is complete, the plant will run more efficiently, effectively and economically. Converting to color coated metal can improve your product and profits.

Misconception 2: Pre-painted metals cannot be molded

Coil-coated metal can be formed without any loss in surface quality or appearance. In fact, painted systems can be designed to offer greater flexibility than metal and can be shaped with finishes that are actually superior to post-painted finishes. This is because post-painted surfaces are often subject to dirt and oil stains, uneven application and other defects. After the metal has been pre-cleaned, pre-primed, pre-treated and pre-painted, it is ready to be shaped. The paint layer is usually more pliable than the metal substrate underneath.

Misconception 3: Edges are not weather resistant

Some manufacturers worry about exposed cut edges on pre-painted metal, but studies have shown that pre-painted cut edges actually hold up better over time than post-painted surfaces.
The reason pre-painted parts outperform post-painted parts is that pre-painted sheet metal is uniformly cleaned, pre-treated and painted to be flat, thus virtually eliminating edge-to-edge and edge-to-edge variability. In most cases, the backside of the pre-painted part is painted; in contrast, the post-painted part has at most a minimal amount of overspray. Uniform prep and paint on the backside of the part improves the corrosion resistance of the part and enhances long-term durability.

Misconception 4: Ungraceful joint results

More and more manufacturers are realizing that pre-painted metal can be easily joined - using adhesives, a variety of mechanical components with or without fasteners, and even welding - and still maintain a more beautiful and flawless finish than post-painted metal.
Using adhesives as a joining method offers several advantages, such as smooth surfaces, clean contours and uniform stress distribution. Adhesives also seal the joint away from the component.
Mechanical assembly is suitable for pre-painted metals with and without fasteners. Nuts, bolts and screws are cost-effective fasteners that provide design flexibility and allow disassembly of parts.
Welding is also an option for joining pre-painted metals. Working closely with a coil coater can make welding an attractive joining option.
