What Are the Metal Coil Coating Line Advantages

Coil coating is the way in which the coating material is applied to a strip of steel or aluminum. A coil of sheet metal is fed continuously into the process, which is controlled by accumulators at each end of the line. They load the bare metal coils at one end and release the finished product at the other end. In between, a coil coating process is used.

What we are doing actually means high speed, continuous coil coating. What makes high speed, continuous coil coating possible is the uninterrupted application of cleaning, handling, coating, curing and potential leveling, while the sheet is flat, all in one high speed path through the coil coating line.

Advantages

Coil coating is replacing traditional manufacturing methods with value-added processes. The old practice of painting unpainted cars is being replaced by penetrating metal sheets. They are used for Nip coating or Dip coating with minimal solvent usage, helping to reduce VOC's.

Coil coating is applied to flat metal strips
Cured in an oven at high temperatures, quenched and retracted with cold water
Coated coils are uncoiled, formed and cut for final use
Painted first, then manufactured - pre-painted
Very low DFT application compared to other coating applications
Almost 100% paint utilization
Low solvent emissions and lower environmental impact
Faster application and therefore higher productivity

Adhesion

The key element for steel panels is that the product is cleaned and finished in a flat state. You don't have any nooks or crannies, as you would with an already formed metal, where surface impurities can hide and impede adhesion, which is ultimately important to the integrity and corrosion resistance of the film. The top and bottom of the metal are thoroughly cleaned and treated, greatly improving the adhesion of the coating. One of the main attributes of high-speed coil-coated metal is its ability to form after coating. Without good adhesion, you cannot realize this potential.

Pre-treatment

Pretreatments are often used to help improve the corrosion resistance of the substrate, usually by passivating or converting the metal surface, usually by phosphate or chromate chemicals. The type of chemical treatment varies depending on the type of metal being used. In addition, pretreatments can help promote bonding between the metal and the coating by adding morphology to the metal surface, thereby improving the performance of the fully coated product.

Applications

Coil coatings are versatile and are the product of choice for pre-coated metal applications in the furniture, construction, household appliance and transportation industries.
Coil coating is a continuous process in which special coatings are applied to steel or aluminum coils before they are manufactured into the final product. Formulators need additives that help improve the adhesion properties of the coating and the mechanical properties of the finished coating. We offer a broad portfolio of pyrolytic metal oxides for coil coating and coil pretreatment that can meet the unique needs of formulators in this specific application.
