Basic Introduction to the Coil Coating Process of Aluminum and Colored Steel

Coil coating refers to the process of manufacturing pre-painted steel and aluminum. Pre-painted steel or aluminum can be found in a large number of household products. From refrigerators to air conditioners and building materials, pre-painted steel can be found everywhere. Different coatings are available for different needs. Color Coating Line Manufacturers LITONG shares some knowledge about the coating process.

Basic knowledge

Coating line is the way in which a coating material is applied to a strip of steel or aluminum. A coil of sheet metal is fed continuously into the process, which is controlled by accumulators at each end of the line. They receive a coil of bare metal at one end and release the finished product at the other end. A coil coating process is used in between.
What makes high-speed continuous coil coating possible is the uninterrupted application of cleaning, handling, coating, curing and potential leveling while the sheet is flat, all in one high-speed path through a coil coating line.

History

Coil coating has changed significantly since the process was first developed in the 1930's, but at that time it did not operate at the same high speeds or continuously as we do today. One of the first major uses of coil coating materials was the coating of discharge lines. In the 1950's and 60's it began to be used more and more extensively.
With the development of accumulation towers, the process became fully industrialized. In the 1970s and 1980s, it was not uncommon for a single system to run continuously for a week. Today, some lines are operating at speeds of up to 1,000 feet per minute. This makes it a very cost effective way to paint metal.

The key

Care must be taken to maintain a constant speed of the strip throughout the process. Accumulators do this by allowing the middle of the line to continue to run at the specified rate while adding new metal at the open end of the line, or removing the finished product from the rewind end of the line.
The key element of the steel plate is that the product is cleaned and finished in a flat state. You don't have any nooks or crannies, just as you would with an already formed metal, where surface impurities can hide and impede adhesion, which is ultimately important for film integrity and corrosion resistance. The top and bottom of the metal are thoroughly cleaned and treated, greatly improving the adhesion of the coating.

Applications

You can then make metal for a variety of applications. Many household appliances, including refrigerators, air conditioners, dryers and water heaters, use some form of pre-coated steel or aluminum in their construction. The automotive industry also uses pre-painted steel or aluminum in its parts. Some large markets, metal roofs and garage doors also use the product. Pre-painted metal, even with cut edges, consistently has a higher corrosion resistance than the painted surface .

Coating metal in a flat state allows for incredible coating uniformity and the industrial process allows for a great deal of control. Please contact us for more information about our coating lines.
